Painted Paper Seascapes

Today' Abbie’s lovely class visited me make the same beautiful seascape artworks that Alex’s class made two weeks ago. It was awesome to have both of the classes from Harakeke so close in succession. These lovely artworks are for the Calendar Art fundraiser. Later on in the year families have the opportunity to order cards, diaries, sketchbook and calendars with their child’s beautiful artwork on it. To create the seascapes this students completed three different elements throughout the day and then arranged the pieces in a final composition.
First the students painted the sky of their seascapes. Some students chose to mix violet, some chose make a light blue by tinting the blue we have in class. The students explored how to mix paint on the palette and how to mix the paint on the page. Once they had covered their page they used the scrapers to create a sgraffito effect to give the sky textured movement.

Next the students painted a separate piece of paper in a combination of blue, turquoise and green. They added white accents over the top to give the effect of white-capped waves. When it was dry the students ripped this page into long strips to be used as the ocean.

To make the boats the students cut our simple triangle and trapezium shapes from magazines. I encouraged the students to try to find hot colours so that the boats would contrast with the cool coloured background. The students glued their boats onto a separate piece of white paper first to make the boats sturdier when arranging the final composition.
I think the final seascapes are gorgeous! I love how much fun the students had mixing the paints and ripping the paper. I got such a kick out of the exclamations of delight from the students as they put their final compositions together. I really do have a fantastic job, I can’t wait for my next day in the art room!
