Squishy Patterned Caterpillars

Today was slightly unusual as Nathan's class had art with me and also competed in the school cross country event. I am so proud of how hard the students worked both on the running course and in the art room. I knew that everyone would be a bundle of nervous excitement before the race and then very tired after it so I kept the art lesson simple today.

The students learnt to work with patterns by learning to draw a squishy caterpillar (thanks to Art Projects for Kids). They practiced making different sorts of patterns with crayon and came up with lots of ideas for patterns such as spirals, cross hatching, dots, bubbles, bricks, squiggly lines, zig-zags and stars. The students drew their caterpillars with crayons and then we used dye to complete the caterpillars. There were many 'oohs' and 'ahhs' as the students used the dye to reveal the crayon patterns beneath.
