Pencil Sketches and Clay Birdies
Gina and Maria’s Year 1/2 class visited me in the art room today. They had already completed their Calendar Art earlier in the term so we spent today exploring pencil sketching and clay building techniques.
First the students practiced pencil techniques in a grid of six squares. They experimented with applying different pressure to the pencil can make a range of marks. They explored lines, curves, circles, shadows, dots, circles and cross hatching.
The students then used these skills to draw sketches of natural objects that I have in the art room. The students had a collection of seed pods, shells and leaves to choose from.
For the second part of the day the students created cute pinch pot birds. The students made a pinch pot and flipped it over for the body of their bird. They joined a beak, tail, eyes and wings to the birds. To do this the students learnt how to join pieces of clay using the slip and score technique. They rouged up both of the surfaces that they wanted to join with a skewer or toothbrush and then added the slept act as a glue.
We had a lovely time in the art room together today. It was fun to get to work with Maria and Gina’s class for a second time this term. I always have a great time with their class and I look forward to seeing them again soon.
