Abstract Nature Prints
Today I worked in Korimako Hub with Sally’s class. We had a lovely day of sketching and printmaking. The aim of the day was to create a run of abstract prints based on an item from nature. At the end of the day the students were going to chose one of their prints to be added to a collection that will be displayed in the entrance way to our school.
I brought my stash of seed pods, shells, feathers, starfish and leaves from the art room up to Korimako to use as subject matter for today’s lesson. We talked about Georgia O’Keefe’s close up flower art works and then the students made their own close-up observational drawings of their chosen subject matter.
The students transferred their images to printing boards and started experimenting with the printing inks. They had a great time mixing printing inks to make new colours. We used a limited ink palette of blue, green purple and white. We did this so that the final prints would be harmonious and sit together nicely in our artwork for the school office.
Below are the prints that the students chose for our joint artwork. I can’t wait to arrange and mount these gorgeous prints into a frame for the office. I will post an update when the artwork is hanging proudly in place in the office.
