Self-Portrait Drawings on Collage
It was a special day today, Caitlin’s class of five year olds ventured out of their classroom and joined me in the art room today for the vey first time! They created gorgeous self-portrait artworks for our school’s Calendar Art fundraiser. Later on in the year families have the opportunity to order cards, diaries, sketchbook and calendars with their child’s beautiful artwork on it.
The students learnt how to collage with tissue paper today. They all chose their own colour scheme. Some students chose hot colours, some chose cold colours and then others chose all of the colours! The students overlapped the tissue paper at the edges to cover up the white spaces. They also spread the colours out over the page so that there were no concentrated areas of a single colour.
After making their beautiful collaged backgrounds the students learnt how to draw a self-portrait. I love teaching young artists about face proportions and some tricks to drawing facial features. I love the added expression in the portraits when the students use the techniques I have taught them. I think the finished portraits are delightful! Such gorgeous detail and personal expression. I am sure that they will look wonderful as a calendar or diary for next year.
