Symbolism with Keith Haring
Michael's Year 4/5/6 Guardian Group spent the day in the art room today learning about the use of symbolism through the work of Keith Haring. To start off we watched a video about Keith Haring's life and artistic style. The students did an excellent job of connecting with Haring's work and were able to identify symbols, ideas and techniques that he used.
The students copied some of Haring's drawings and began to create their own symbols and characters. I was impressed with the creative ideas and messages that the students wanted to incorporate into their artwork. Ideas such as family, friendship, personal identity, climate change, and solidarity were all present in their drawings.
The next step was to create interesting compositions using their own symbols and characters. The students used acrylic paint and a range of different sized paint brushes to paint their artwork. Some of the students found painting their drawings a bit challenging but I am really proud of their efforts. To finish the artwork the students used black marker to create outlines and movement lines around the symbols like Keith Haring did.
